Das Rheingebiet wurde in neun Bearbeitungsgebiete unterteilt, wovon Baden-Württemberg aufgrund seiner geographischen Lage als einziges deutsches Bundesland Anteile an fünf Bearbeitungsgebieten hat: Alpenrhein/Bodensee, Hochrhein, Oberrhein, Neckar und Main. Ein weiteres Bearbeitungsgebiet in Baden-Württemberg ist das Donaueinzugsgebiet.
